assignment 1 – frankenstein project

When contemplating ideas for my project, I first thought about Andy Warhol’s silk-screened appropriated art. His mass-produced images from photographs of celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley and Jackie Onassis, however aren’t really appropriated art though because they’re actual people, not art to begin with. The concept of using a person as a subject for art intrigued me because of how Warhol simply used photos of famous people as the basis for some of his art. Marilyn Monroe has been photographed, drawn, painted and produced as a piece of art by many; she has been re-created several times, especially images of her face. I decided to use Warhol’s silk-screen prints of her face as the foundation for my collage. While Warhol’s prints were from the 1960s, today’s growing technology continuously increases issues of copyright and appropriation. I wanted to show this influence in my collage by manipulating the colorful prints of Marilyn’s face to become more and more pixilated, to show the affect all of this has on art. I organized the use of color and varying levels of pixilation so that the collage aesthetically works as a whole composition.
